The IEA Says It Is Not Clear That Onsite Generation Necessarily Promises Data Centers a Faster Route to Market at Scale, in the Context of a Supply Crunch for Gas Turbines

The IEA's executive summary says reliable onsite gas-fired power for "critical and variable data centre load" requires overbuilding onsite generation relative to demand, and that, with a supply crunch for gas turbines, "it is not clear that onsite generation necessarily promises a faster route to market for data centres at scale."

Must Foot the Bill: Michigan's Commission Approves Battery Storage for a Data Center

On March 27, 2026, Michigan's Public Service Commission approved six energy storage projects for a utility, three of them to serve a data center whose developer must pay to develop storage that matches the data center's contracted demand. The same release recorded that the commission denied petitions for rehearing on the data center's special contracts.

A Record If Realized, and More Than Half of It Solar: EIA on the Capacity Planned for 2026

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that developers and operators plan to add a record amount of generating capacity to the U.S. grid in 2026, if the plans are realized. Solar makes up the largest share of the plan, followed by battery storage and wind.
