Including Additional Data Center Development: Kinder Morgan's Second Quarter of 2026

Kinder Morgan's results release of July 22, 2026 reports a lateral placed in service to a new gas-fired power plant, and an expansion project "to support growing demand in the Texas Panhandle, including additional data center development."

Kinder Morgan calls itself "one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America." On July 22, 2026 it reported its results for the second quarter of 2026. Beside the earnings, the release reports on pipeline projects, and names data center development for one of them. Parts of the release follow, not the whole.

The Project Backlog

The chief executive, quoted in the release, puts the company's project backlog at $9.6 billion at the end of the quarter. Natural gas projects make up about 92% of it. And more than 60% of the backlog, in the chief executive's words, "is associated with projects supporting power generation and local distribution company demand."

The executive chairman says that "demand for natural gas infrastructure continues to grow." The statement's next sentence names "rising power demand," beside exports of liquefied natural gas and industrial expansion, as making the company's existing assets more valuable.

A Lateral in Service, an Expansion to Come

On May 26, 2026, the company's Tennessee Gas Pipeline placed in service its Cumberland project, a lateral ending at a new natural gas-fired power plant in Stewart County, Tennessee. It provides "approximately 245,000 Dth/d of additional natural gas transportation service" to support the commissioning and operation of that plant.

Another project names data centers. Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America, the release says, "is continuing to develop its Amarillo Expansion project to support growing demand in the Texas Panhandle, including additional data center development." The expansion "is expected to provide incremental firm transportation capacity of up to approximately 550,000 Dth/d," and "All of the project's capacity is fully subscribed under a long-term contract." The release names no customer.

The pipeline company was preparing to file its application with the federal energy regulator in the third quarter of 2026, and it expects the project in service in the third quarter of 2028, "With the timely receipt of all required permits and approvals." Further on, the release says that "All expected in-service dates for projects described above assume timely receipt and continued effectiveness of all necessary permits and approvals."

The release names data center development for an expansion whose application had not yet been filed with the regulator. For a developer counting on that gas, the in-service date is only as firm as the permits behind it.
