Wärtsilä Corporation, which works in "the marine and energy markets," issued a stock exchange release on July 21, 2026. It calls itself a summary of the company's half-year financial report, and says "The complete report is attached to this release as a pdf file." Its comparison figures for 2025 and the first half of 2026 have been restated after the company classified its Energy Storage business as held for sale, and unless otherwise stated, "the comparison figures in brackets refer to the corresponding period of the previous year."
Among other things, the chief executive's statement in the release speaks of a record quarter, of interest from data centers, and of equipment delivery times that "continued to increase."
A Record Quarter
For April to June 2026, total order intake rose by 33% to EUR 2,849 million (2,140), the release says, and organic growth, which excludes currency effects and acquisitions and divestments, was 43%. The order book at the end of June was up 13% at EUR 8,976 million (7,963).
The chief executive's statement says order intake "increased organically by 43% to a new all-time high, supported by record quarterly orders in both Energy and Marine." In Energy, it says, "order intake surpassed the previous all-time high set in the first quarter of 2026 by more than 70%, largely as a result of 1.2 GW of firm data centre-related orders across two projects and more than 0.5 GW in balancing orders." It adds that "Robust demand in Energy has contributed to more than doubling the Energy order book since the start of 2025."
By the statement's own account, the record quarter in Energy came largely from firm data center orders across two projects and from balancing orders. For a buyer of engines, an order book filling with large orders is also a queue, and the release does not say how long that queue is.
Data Centers in the Statement
The statement says electricity demand continued to grow, "supported by electrification, rising cooling needs, and the rapid build-out of data centres." It calls the interest from the data center segment strong, "with a dynamic pipeline of opportunities."
It also cites an analysis by another party, which it says identifies "engines as the most cost-competitive technology option for AI data centres." The release gives the company's account of that analysis, and not the analysis itself.
Longer Waits
On sales, the statement says "Net sales increased organically by 5%, driven by growth in equipment deliveries. Equipment delivery times continued to increase, impacting the timing of revenue recognition. Consequently, the existing order book will generate sales that are distributed further into the future." The release does not say how long the delivery times are.
During the quarter the company announced a further expansion of production capacity at what it calls its Sustainable Technology Hub. "Once fully commissioned in the first quarter of 2029, the expansion will increase output to approximately 2.2 times the 2025 operational level." For the year ahead, its outlook for Energy says Wärtsilä "expects the demand environment for the next 12 months (Q3/2026-Q2/2027) to be similar to that of the comparison period."
Delivery times that continued to increase and a factory expansion to be fully commissioned in 2029 sit in the same statement. For a project that needs engines before then, the question is which side of that date its machines fall on.
