Primary Power for a Data Center: Kodiak Gas Services' Agreement in West Texas

Kodiak Gas Services' release of September 21, 2026 announces an agreement to provide behind-the-meter, baseload power capacity to a West Texas data center "for a term of six years," from natural gas-fueled generation units. The customer is described and not named, and the release states no price.

Kodiak Gas Services, Inc. is, in its own words, a provider of "contract compression, distributed power, and energy infrastructure services" in the United States. In a release dated September 21, 2026, it announced power for a data center. The company said it "has entered into an agreement to provide" 76 MW "of behind-the-meter, baseload power capacity, including balance of plant, to a West Texas data center for a term of six years."

Behind the meter, baseload, and with the balance of plant included. Those are the release's own terms for what is supplied, and the release does not define them.

The customer, described and not named

The release describes the customer without naming it. Kodiak "will deploy approximately 40 reciprocating natural gas-fueled generation units to a data center operator that is contracted with an investment-grade-rated hyperscaler and has a GPU designer as guarantor of the data center lease." It names none of them: not the operator, not the hyperscaler, not the GPU designer.

The operator, in the release's words, "is contracted with" the hyperscaler, and has the GPU designer "as guarantor of the data center lease." The release does not say whose lease that is.

The customer's standing rests on two parties the release describes and does not name. A lender would want those names, and the terms of that guarantee, in writing.

When the power arrives

The timing is set out as an expectation. "Deployment of the power assets is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and scale into the first quarter of 2027 with revenue recognition anticipated to start in the first quarter of 2027." Expected, and anticipated.

The release states no price and no contract value. It does not say what the agreement requires when units are down, or how long the data center lease itself runs.

The release gives the power agreement's term and not the term of the data center lease. A lender would want to see whether the power is contracted for as long as that lease runs.

A second contract of its kind

The release quotes the company's president and chief executive officer on where the agreement sits in its business. The agreement "represents Kodiak’s second long-term contract to supply primary power to a data center," and "Approximately half of our current power portfolio is now under long-term power contracts." Approximately half, in the company's own measure.

The release also limits what it says. Its forward-looking statements, it says, "are neither historical facts nor assurances of future performance," and each one "speaks only as of the date on which it is made."
